[Bibliographical reference: Bagnall R779 -"South Island place names".] William Henry Sherwood Roberts (1834-1917). New Zealand history."When I landed in New Zealand in 1855 the Europeans had the opportunity of seeing more of the Aborigines than they have at the present time, as the numbers have greatly decreased, especially in the Middle Island. The melodious Maori language was then spoken by the Natives in its pristine purity, whereas now it is intermixed with so many English words Maori-cised, that it is difficult to determine which are pure. Many words used when the Maori first arrived in Aotearoa are now obsolete, and the meaning has been forgotten, for the Maori had no written language, everything being handed down to posterity by memory, taught viva voce. It is much to be regretted that more care has not been used in correctly spelling the names of places by those who first obtained them from the Maori"- page 3. ; 8vo
